The Warehouse stores resources, preventing enemy plundering of the *SOME* RESOURCES (depending on the level) in the event of a raid or attack. Resources stored in a Warehouse will NOT be taken by an opponent UNLESS the attacking player has researched Privateering (which is only 3% each level, offering 30% of stored resources plundered on level 10). Warehouse capacity can be increased by researching the Stockpile technology. Each level of Stockpile offers an increased capacity of 10%, hence 100% increase in storage by level 10.
EDIT: The formula for Privateering is X*(0.97)^L. X being storehouse capacity and L being the level of the skill. So at level 10, Privateering drops the warehouse store ability by about 26% not 30%. The Stockpile formula is X*(1.1)^L. X being storehouse capacity and L being the level of the skill. So the max it can raise it is about 160%, not 100%.
Note: Warehouses may only store Food, Lumber, Stone, and Iron. Gold may not be stored in a Warehouse. See Marketplace for additional strategy.

One of the earliest methods of food preservation was sun or air drying. This technique works by removing most of the foods' water and thereby limiting activity of the microorganisms. The warehouse finally came to being, which gave the early people a place to store their food.
